10 Ways to Boost Work Productivity

Break time

A short, five-minute walk will not only clear your head, but will also help get the blood flowing. Get outside for some fresh air and a change of scenery. You’ll come back to the office feeling fresh and rejuvenated and ready to restart your work.

Set your priorities

When you get to work in the morning, make a to-do list, arranging each task in the order you want to accomplish them. If you want to save time, make a to-do list the night before and then update it throughout the day. Checking things off your list will also leave you feeling accomplished.

Think long-term

Develop two big-picture things that you want to accomplish throughout the year and post them next to your computer, so you can frequently remind yourself to work toward them. These should be goals that you can talk about in your performance review and use as leverage when asking for a raise.

Get in early

A quiet, empty office inherently means less distractions, so arrive early before the workroom gets crowded. Coworkers are one of the biggest distractions and can really put a damper on your daily productivity, so decreasing the number of people surrounding you will help.

Surf the Web

Web browsing can refresh you and enhance your productivity, according to a study released last year by the National University of Singapore. So don’t feel guilty about taking intermittent breaks from tasks to surf the Web and visit your favorite sites. Surf for five to 10 minutes and then get back to work.

Stick to one task

You might think you get more done multitasking, but in reality, you don’t. Career coaches agree that the brain serves you better if you only focus on one thing at a time. So block out time to do certain tasks, and don’t switch from one activity to another.


Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting in a still position and humming. You simply need to do something that relaxes you. A few minutes of solid meditation will recharge your batteries. Deep breathing and stretching can easily be done at your desk.

Snack appropriately

High-protein, high-fiber snacks are best for productivity. If you’re going to snack on fruit, add some peanut butter for energy and two pieces of high-fiber bran crisp bread. Or pair a handful of high-fiber cereal with a flavored Greek yogurt. Also, don’t snack on pretzels and chips—they’re full of simple sugars that create a quick rise in blood sugar levels, but they aren’t good for the long haul.

Take a power nap

Medical studies have shown that short napping in the early afternoon can increase your productivity, alertness, and potentially even your mood. A short, regenerative nap lets you channel your energy and refocus. Just be sure not to sleep too long (15 to 20 minutes maximum), or it could create problems with your boss.

Stay hydrated

When the body is dehydrated, all your systems are working at a less-than-ideal capacity. This makes it harder for you to stay focused and be productive. People also tend to rely on high-caffeine drinks such as coffee and Red Bull, but those can add up in calories. Their caffeine content also dehydrates you more and provides only a short spurt of energy. So trade in the afternoon coffee for a glass of iced water._____________________________________
